DESCRIPTION
A commercial for The Japanese Craft Gin, “Roku” by Suntory.
STORY CHALLENGES
We’re always trying to increase our knowledge and skill. Being stuck at home during a pandemic with minimal gear means you have to get creative to find ways of creating and bringing value to your clients in new ways. To prove we can still create compelling and professional content in a pandemic with a minimal crew and resources, we decided to experiment with some tabletop product photography/videography, which is not something we’ve done much of in the past. So we decided to create a new Gin commercial on spec for Roku Gin.
This project was not sponsored or paid for by Suntory, or any representatives of Roku Gin. I happen to enjoy the gin which I was introduced to while working a project in Japan. It is now available in the US and has an interesting hook of infusing the gin with six unique Japanese Botanicals. This sparked my imagination to take the visual cues of the hexagon bottle with the 6 flavors into something interesting.
TECHNICAL CHALLENGES
To pull it off, I also decided to tap another resource most of us have at home or our office; a television. By creating various backdrops and motion graphics, I could play these back on the TV as a pseudo video wall rear projection device to create some interesting in-camera compositing effects. This is the result.
All shot with a single man crew, and only 2 lights, plus a hand model for the pour (my wife). Shot on a Sony A7III with Sony 24-105mm F4, and Canon FD 50mm F3.5 macro lens.
I hope you enjoy it. If you have some products and need a video like this or a more traditional spot, please contact us.
We also made a shorter 15 second version for social media.
